Frequently Asked Questions About Our Centres
1. Where are your centres located? We have two locations in Kamloops. Our South Kamloops Centre is located at 623 Victoria Street, and our North Kamloops Centre is located at 353 Tranquille Road. Paid Parking is available in front of our South shore location, and is available free in the Village square in front of the North shore location. Bus stops are conveniently located within walking distance of both centres.
2. What hours are you open to the public? Both centres are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Thursday from 11:00 am 4:00 pm. We are closed evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. We close occasionally for facility maintenance activities, but such closures are infrequent and we try to provide as much advance notice as possible of such closures.
3. Can I access either centre?
Yes, as long as you are legally entitled to work in Canada, you can access both of our centres.
4. What happens during my first visit to one of the centres?
One of our friendly staff members will greet you upon arrival and ask you if you have visited either centre previously. If you are making your first visit, this staff member will give you a quick (2 to 3 minute) tour of the facility and explain our services (Assisted/Self directed) to you. After that, you will be free to go ahead and use our resources at your leisure.
5. Does it make a difference if I am on EI or Income Assistance?
No. The only criteria for accessing our services are that you are legally eligible to work in Canada.
6. Are there people at your centres who can help me with my work search?
Our centres are staffed by highly skilled Client Assistance Officers, individual Employment Advisors, and Front End Staff. We can assist you with logging onto our computers, provide feedback on your resume or cover letter, provide guidance on using and interpreting some of our print resources, meet with you and assist in career decisions, developing resumes, instruct you in the usage of computers and software programs, and so much more. We also offer a number of workshops which you are free to attend if you become a registered client.
7. What services are not provided at your centres?
Our centres provide all aspects of employment related services. If an individual's needs are better suited by another service provider, we will make the appropriate referral.
8. What types of activities are considered “work search” related?
Searching for work can encompass a variety of activities, including resume and cover letter preparation, labour market research, career planning, educational planning, proposal development (for contract work), business plan development, responding to job postings, contacting employers by telephone or email, faxing employment or education-related documents, and much more. Generally speaking, if you are eligible to use our services and you are conducting activities that will help you secure work, you are okay to access our centres.
9. What types of activities are not considered “work search” related?
Some of the activities that we do not consider work search related include searching for living accommodations, applying for EI or Income Assistance, using the resources for legal or political purposes, using the resources for recreational or personal purposes, or using the resources for business income-earning purposes. Clients found using our resources for these or any other activities which we deem inappropriate or unrelated to looking for work will be asked to discontinue such activities, and may be denied future access to our services.
10. If I am currently enrolled in another government-funded program to help me find work, can I still access your centres?
Yes.
11. I am looking into self-employment…can I access your services?
Yes, as long as you are in the researching/exploring phase. You cannot access our services if you are already self-employed and earning income from your business activities, or if you are close to becoming self-employed. For example, you can use our computers to conduct research into the feasibility of a business opportunity, but you would not be allowed to use our services if you are just about to open a business (for example, we would not provide you with photocopies of your completed business plan). Please also be reminded that the general eligibility criteria for accessing our centres still applies to business research (in other words, you may just be exploring self-employment).
12. I am thinking about going back to school or taking some other training to improve my skills and chances of finding work. Can I access your centres to help me plan my education?
Yes.
13. I need to update my resume or have a business plan typed up, but I don't have the skills or the time to do it myself. Do you offer typing or clerical services at your centres?
We would be pleased to assist you to the greatest extent possible; however we do not offer general clerical/administrative services in the drop-in area of our centres. If you become a registered client, however, one of our Job Coaches may be able to provide additional assistance in this area. There are also other firms in the community that can provide such services (usually for a fee) - please ask one of our friendly staff for more information.
14. Is there a fee for this service?
No, there are no fees for accessing the resources at our centres. However, please be reminded that our centres are restricted to work search related activities only. |
